How Dog Training Can Help With Behavior Problems
If your dog has a behavior problem, it's time to learn some good training techniques to get past this problem. Don't simply accept behavior problems as part of life when you own a dog. While every dog is unique, behavior problems are not unique, so any problem you're seeing has been observed before and a solution has been found.
Does your dog jump up on people with its paws? If so, this is a habit you really want to break. Whether your dog is doing this to be friendly, or out of fear, the habit should be kicked. Puppies typically do this to express affection for their mother, so this is quite natural for dogs. It is a cute behavior, yet as they get older, puppies will grow into larger dogs which can become quite intimidating when replicating these same mannerisms. If you push the dog away, this is the wrong thing to do as the puppy will think you are interacting. It's best to turn to the side with your body so the dog can't get its paws on your chest. Say "sit"! If the dog does, give it praise for doing what it is told. You simply need to start early enough in order to ensure that your dog will not have this behavior.
Dog biting is definitely an issue that many dog owners need to be concerned about. People that you know, and strangers on the street, could be bitten by your dog if you don't take care of this.
Your dog could actually be taken away, and put down, if it ever bites another person. Never allow biting behaviors to persist as this could lead to large problems. Even with small puppies, never tolerate nibbling or mouthing because this could lead to biting later on in life. Obedience training may be an absolute necessity if the biting problem does not go away. While you are figuring out what to do, watch your dog at all times.
Some people who aren't experienced with dogs will get a dog and not give much thought to training it. They think it's only for specialized purposes, such as if you want your dog to do tricks or be a guard dog. A dog who obeys even a few commands is a much better pet than one whom you have no control over. Dogs are pack animals who need to understand their place in the family. Problems often result because dogs don't recognize the people around them as above them in the pack, so they do whatever they want. Dogs who aren't trained end up leading very limited lives, because their owners can't afford to give them much freedom for fear of what they might do. A trained dog is not only easier to live with, it's a happier dog. When you make the effort to train your dog the right way, most behavior problems will work themselves out. Well trained dogs are not only less likely to misbehave, but they're much easier to live with in general. You don't have to wait until your dog develops a serious behavior problem to start training him. If the problem already exists, you can find a training method that's designed to deal with it.
